Virtual ServersVirtualization Assessment

Currently GTC provides the virtualization assessment at no charge.

GTC's Virtualization Assessment will provide the knowledge needed to make more efficient use of your servers and other related IT assets.

In this assessment our team will use tools from top tier virtualization vendors to collect 30 days of performance data on all servers and use industry best practices to provide an objective evaluation and assessment for moving the business to a virtual platform providing you with a report outlining which servers are good candidates for virtualization. Below is a basic outline of our approach:

Required Hardware, Software, Access

  • Hardware: One high-end PC or Server (P4 2GHz or better with at least 2GB of ram and 5GB of free drive space) that can be used to install the data collection tool. The server needs to have outbound access to https://optimize.vmware.com and the following ports open: 135, 137 through 139, and 445 between it and the servers it will monitor.

  • Software: Server 2003 SP2 and .NET 2.0

  • Access: Domain Administrator Account needed for data collection.

Data Collection

  • Configure Data Collection Server and tools.

  • Collect performance and capacity statistics over a 30 day period

  • Show local technical staff how to check on the data collection every few days to ensure that it is still running

Analysis

  • Take the data that was collected from the Data Collection Phase and use it to create the following deliverables:

    • Current Server Inventory
    • Performance Data over the 30 day period
    • Virtualization Scenarios based on Dual CPU Quad Core Servers with 16GB of memory and Quad CPU Quad Core Servers with 32GB of memory.
    • ROI Analysis based on current servers purchased as well as environmental expenses.
    • Existing Servers that are candidates for Host Servers
    • Existing Servers that are candidates for P2V

Delivery

  • Send all Reports to the Client IT team
  • Meeting with Client to go over the data collected once they have had a chance to review the reports.
