In a physical environment, every application depends on its OS for a range of services, including memory allocation, device drivers, and much more. Incompatibilities between an application and its operating system can be addressed by either server virtualization or presentation virtualization; but for incompatibilities between two applications installed on the same instance of an OS, you need application virtualization. Citrix is the company that pioneered the concept of Application Virtualization since the late 1980’s allowing the capability to launch an application on a Terminal Server (using Microsoft Terminal Services extended by Citrix XenApp). Terminal Services was a technology that Microsoft acquired from Citrix in 1997. When a user clicks on the application icon the application launches at the server and a communication protocol like ICA or RDP transfers screen updates from the server to the client and mouse clicks and keyboard strokes from the client to the server. Application Virtualization solutions also leverage streaming the app at run time thus transform applications into centrally-managed virtual services that are never installed and don’t conflict with other applications. Benefits Following are some of the benefits of Application Virtualization:
