Virtual ServersServer Virtualization

Nowadays Severs consume around 10% of the server hardware resources. Virtualization allows us to host up to 10 servers or more as guest Servers on one physical server host. Each server becomes like a file called a VM (Virtual machine).

This is achieved by installing a piece of software called a Hypervisor on the bare metal server, converting other physical server into virtual servers and then hosting these servers as virtual machines on the hypervisor. This allows us to host servers with multiple operating systems (Windows, Linux, Unix) on one physical host.

Benefits

  • When a server becomes a “file” that you can copy, move  and back up so easily this tremendously changes the rule of the game.

  • When any organization has a need to provision a new server, the process can take days if not weeks especially when it involves the acquisition of new server hardware.  You first have to request the server, then it goes to purchasing who has to place a P.O. then it has to be shipped, received, unboxed, racked, configured, etc. This process could easily take two weeks.  With server virtualization in place you can reduce this time from weeks to minutes.
  • When you reduce the number of physical servers you use a lot less power

  • When you reduce the number of physical servers use a lot less rack space in the data center

  • Virtualization makes a Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery strategy affordable, doable, testable and repeatable.
