Thin Clients

thin clientsA thin client is a low-cost, centrally-managed “computer” devoid of any moving parts like a fan, CD-ROM players, diskette drives, hard drives and expansion slots. Since the idea is to limit the capabilities of these computers to only essential applications, they tend to be purchased and remain "thin" in terms of the client applications they include. As virtualization and software-as-a-service (SaaS) gains popularity, it is expected that thin clients will replace desktop PCs in many work and educational environments.

Benefits and ROI Considerations

  • Initial Cost: Thin Clients are generally cheaper than a full fledged PC. But the biggest savings with thin clients is not necessarily in the initial purchase price which sometimes is the same as a full PC.

  • Security: Thin clients are in general not as vulnerable to malware attacks. Also unlike a PC, there is usually no corporate data that resides on a thin client. If a thin client is stolen it is useless because it needs to connect to a server in order to show any data.

  • Desktop Refresh: Thin Clients have a longer life cycle. The mean time between failures for a thin client is a lot longer than a full PC. Organizations can extend the desktop refresh cycle from around three years on average to about five years which can really free up a lot of IT budget dollars to do more important things.

  • Green Computing: Thin Clients use a lot less power than a PC.

  • Ongoing Costs: The biggest benefit though of a thin client “computer” is that it takes a lot less to manage it, update it and maintain it saving organizations a lot of time and money.
